Task 2: Responsibilities Of An Art Director Within Contemporary Graphic Design Practice

Posted on March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

When it came to defining these three staple roles of the design world, I found that the easiest way to summarize each position was with an analogy. Let’s look at a company’s campaign as if it was a movie set shall we. Well, that would make the Creative Director our Movie Director, as both roles are the visionary leaders of their projects and are responsible for how the brand/ movie looks and feels as well as the over-arching message. Basically, they set the direction/ tone and then make sure everyone is on task. So, using this analogy, that makes the Account Director the Producer. They are our money managers, negotiators and client whisperers. Their role is a lot less art focused, with their primary purpose being to make sure the projects stay on budget and the creative team delivers both on time, and to the standard of the client/ company. Now, with our Director and Producer on set we’re ready to start rolling, but wait where’s our lead actor? Well, that’s were a Senior Designer would come in. They’re our first chair, top of the food chain ‘doers’. Whilst still being responsible for some of the design work, they’re trusted with the more difficult elements, as well as managing and assisting the artists ranked below them. They’re often the main person who helps make the Creative Directors dream become a reality. Think Tim Burton and his love of Johnny Depp.

A great example of a top-tier Director has to be Carolane Isabel and her work with Rose Bakery. In a world where bakeries are a dime a baker’s dozen (pun intended), creating a successful brand outside of the traditional style approach can prove a challenge. Working with her agency Super Studio, she created a series of ‘potato print styled’ sourdough screen prints, alongside an elevated logo redesign, to create a whole new narrative for this small-town business (Ellis T, 2025). The campaign created something bold yet minimal, setting it apart from other businesses and creating a large buzz on social media platforms, even making it into a few top 10 best graphic design lists. By introducing this botanical art into the companies packaging, merchandise and even window displays, she successfully created a whole new conversation for this independent boulangerie (Ellis T, 2025). Truly rising to the challenge.

Overall, art directors are crucial to how we see brands and absorb media in the modern era. In a time of fleeting attention, art direction moves beyond aesthetics to emotional architecture. Without their influence, branding can often feel corporate and soulless, struggling to impact in the appropriate way. Alongside this, art directors are also vital in creating consistency throughout brands, making sure each product is easily recognizable to its audience. This combines into ultimately creating a narrative of trust and authenticity to any business smart enough to capitalize on this role.
